The history of Christianity must be revised

St Gregory of Nyssa on Dr John Dunn. First posted Sunday, 16 August 2015 at 20:39

St. Gregory of Nyssa St. Sophia Cathedral in Kiev

Gregory of Nyssa, influenced by Plotinus, contrasted the participated goodness of finite things with the unparticipated goodness of God the Father, which includes all excellence in a wholly unsplintered, simple fashion, and contrasts with the Word which ramifies into countless distinct energies, and with the Soul which, in its higher functions, has much of the paradoxical unity-in-multiplicity of divinity.

Whilst studying Gregory of Nyssa, I’m reminded of the statement by Georges Ory -

“The history of Christianity must be revised. Those who undertake this task will discover fascinating surprises as their eyes open onto a very different history from that taught in church and school.”

John Dunn.
